Beautiful writing, Sis, as usual. And Ruby, the Wonder Dog, lived up to her name by helping to bring you and Wayne together among her many other accomplishments. As far as that bravery thing goes, having known you longer than anyone and lost more than a few childhood battles with you, I’ll personally attest to your courage. Only the fiercest don’t realize how brave they really are!
I’m so sorry about your little girl. I know she is in a better place and had the best life ever. Barney is old now too. I have been notified by so many people who adopted dogs from me and it gets harder and harder for us all when they go
I got a text message from one of my little fosters saying:”hi mom. I just want to let you know I’m in doggie heaven. Don’t worry about me. I’m happy and have lots of friends”. I cried for an hour and am tearing up as I type this
I’m sorry Wayne is not well but I’m sure you will be sailing around your home and visiting your family in Florida
Hi Phyllis, Thanks for writing. Yes, it is so very hard to say good-bye to our dogs. I will always remember meeting Barney for the first time at your place, and I'm thankful for all the love you have given your foster babies through the years. It takes a very special person. :-)
Having been through some recent health issues with both my wife and our mini schnauzer I have some understanding of the life you are experiencing...but I am certainly nowhere near as adventurous as you. As you demonstrate, life goes on and we just face what confronts us. May it continue to be blue and salty. :)
Stewart - Sorry to hear that you too have been dealing with health issues in your family. The people whom I consider really courageous are those coping with serious health problems. And Yes! Blue and salty all the way!
Thanks, fellow Trawler Forum friend. We are working on the boat trying to figure out where to go next.... and it took us a month the move Ruby's harness from where we had dropped it when we returned to the boat that day. We'll eventually figure out how to move forward.
All my best wishes to you two as you navigate these new waters. It is a big new challenge.
I can surely relate to the fears of coming up on watch and finding Russel gone. So far, we are both doing okay healthwise, but life can always throw us a curve. Our old dog Ready is failing slowly and took an unexpected dip off the dock in a marina recently so now I have to watch her more closely. But for now we're all three hanging in here aboard.
Thanks my fellow Substack writer. I think we women know that the statistics on the number of men who have gone overboard with their pants unzipped. Right?
I was beginning to worry. I hadn’t seen a post about Möbius in quite some time . I alway follow your journeys when Wayne posts on Facebook. I am sorry to learn about his health issues and the loss of Ruby. It’s so sad when our pups leave us. I hope that you and Wayne have many more years of adventures on Möbius.
Hi Al, Sorry to make you worry, but we've been struggling to find our way forward. Ruby is the third dog I've had to help along. It's so difficult to know when the time is right. This time she told us clearly that she was ready to go. It didn't make it any easier, though. I love your Facebook food posts. You are a lucky man to have married such a wonderful culinary artist!
You are so right about knowing when the right time is to help our furry friends over the bridge. I’ve held all of our pups as they go and it is always heartbreaking for me. Is coastal cruising in your future? I’ll bet that you can come up with some colorful locations for mysterious plots for your books. I’m glad that you enjoy my food posts. Both Kris and I love to cook.
Always enjoy your delightful writing, though saddened to read about the end to cruising aboard. Life has its never ending transitions where change is the requisite option. I’ll be interested in hearing as your new adventures unfold.
Enjoyed your story about the trip, but I am sorry your blue water days may be over. Hopefully you will be able to find a way to still enjoy your unique and wonderful boat in some way. We hated to move off of our 48 ft ketch, but we had to work and didn't have the time. Now of course we have the time, but not the boat! (Also, have read your first 3 books!)

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis and about Ruby. 💚

Thanks Juan! We will figure out how to navigate these new waters.
Great do it all boat. Love it. Congratulations.
Thanks James. We do love our Möbius. She is a very comfortable and capable home.
Best of luck to your next adventure! Sorry to hear about Wayne’s diagnosis and the passing of your pup.
